What Signal Private Messenger does
Signal is a messaging app where every chat and call is end-to-end encrypted by default. You don't have to switch on a special mode. One-to-one chats, groups, voice calls and video calls all use the same protection.
You sign up with a phone number. After that you can set a username and share that instead, so people can contact you without seeing your number.
Signal collects very little data about its users. The organisation has published court documents showing that, when asked for user data, it could only provide the date an account was created and the last time it connected.
It covers the everyday things people expect from a messenger: group chats, disappearing messages, stickers, voice notes, file sharing and a desktop app that links to your phone. Fewer people use it than WhatsApp, so you may need to ask friends to install it.
Who it's for
People who want private messaging without changing settings, and anyone who prefers an app with no advertising business behind it.

- End-to-end encryption for all chats and calls by default

Signal Private Messenger alternatives
- WhatsApp Messenger: Most of your contacts may already use WhatsApp. Both use the Signal Protocol for personal chats, but WhatsApp is owned by Meta and its code is not public.
- Telegram: Telegram suits large groups and public channels better. Regular Telegram chats are not end-to-end encrypted, unlike every Signal chat.
