What Telegram does
Telegram stores regular chats on its servers. That's why you can open the same conversation on several devices at once and see full history straight away, even on a new phone.
The trade-off is encryption. Regular chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, not end to end. For one-to-one end-to-end encryption you need to start a "Secret Chat", which only works on the device where you started it. Group chats cannot be end-to-end encrypted.
Groups can hold up to 200,000 members, and channels can broadcast to unlimited subscribers. There's also a bot platform, used for everything from news alerts to small tools. Some large public channels show sponsored messages, and a paid Premium tier adds features such as larger uploads.
