Update apps from Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Press your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, press Update all, or See details to update apps one at a time.
If an app doesn't show an update you know exists, the release may be rolling out gradually. Developers often release to a percentage of users first.
Turn automatic updates on or off
In Google Play, press your profile picture, then Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps. Choose whether updates download over any network or Wi-Fi only. To stop one app from updating, open its Play listing, press the three-dot menu and untick Enable auto update.
Update apps installed from an APK
Google Play won't update an app it didn't install unless the signatures match. Your options:
- Let the app update itself. Some apps installed from the developer's site check for updates on their own.
- Install the newer APK over the old one. Download the new version from the same official source and open it. Your data stays as long as the signature matches. See the APK installation guide.
- Check the version history. App pages here have a version history section where release information is available, for example VLC version history.
To see which version you have right now, follow how to find an app's version number.
